What is Podiatry?

Podiatry (Chiropody) is the diagnosis and treatment by podiatrists of disorders of and affecting the feet.

Podiatrists are highly skilled health professionals who have been trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate problems affecting the foot and lower limb.

They may also prevent or correct deformities of the feet, relieve pain and keep people mobile.

Only the titles Podiatrist and Chiropodist are protected by law. Other foot related titles are not regulated by the Health Professions Council (HPC). Regulation by the HPC helps to ensure uniformity of standards and requires proof of ongoing training and updating of knowledge.

Designatory qualifications to look for:

MChS/FChS - Member/Fellow of the Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists

DPodM  - Diploma in Podiatric Medicine

FCPOdS - Podiatric Surgeon

BSc/BSc (Hons) Pod - Batchelor of science degree in Podiatric Medicine (ensure that the degree is actually for podiatry)
